Company History

BioLogos was founded by one of the top biologists in the world, Francis Collins. He led the Human Genome Project and directed the National Institutes of Health from 2009 to 2021. In 2006, he wrote the best-selling book The Language of God in which he tells his journey from atheism to Christian belief, showing that science is not in conflict with the Bible, but actually enhances faith. The outpouring of response to the book showed the need for virtual and actual meeting places to ask questions, discuss issues, and learn from the top Christian minds in the sciences and theology.

In 2009, BioLogos launched its website, including the first Common Questions pages and a regular blog. Later in 2009, BioLogos held the first of several annual events in New York City, hosted by Rev. Tim Keller, for leading pastors and theologians to gather with believing scientists for dialogue and worship. Under the leadership of President Darrel Falk, the BioLogos daily blog grew to thousands of readers, and BioLogos began new programs including the “Biology by the Sea” workshop for high school teachers (2010-2012). Falk intentionally initiated dialogue with organizations that have differing views. He brought BioLogos into conversation with Southern Baptist leaders and with Reasons to Believe, leading to the 2017 book Old Earth or Evolutionary Creation?

In 2013, Deborah Haarsma became President and the organization relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan. From 2013-2015, BioLogos ran the “Evolution and Christian Faith” grants program, which funded 37 projects across North America and Europe. In 2015, BioLogos launched the biennial “Faith & Science” conferences that are held at locations around the country. The website continued to grow into a rich resource of articles, blog posts, and personal stories from hundreds of authors. In 2016, BioLogos published a book of essays How I Changed My Mind about Evolution, which began the book series with InterVarsity Press.

In 2019, topics were expanded to address many areas at the intersection of Christ-centered faith and rigorous science, including creation care and medicine & bioethics. The podcast Language of God was launched, presenting engaging interviews, stories, and on-site experiences. The podcast has regularly invited guests who don't agree with either BioLogos’ faith or science. Examples include Krista Tippett, Marcelo Gleiser, Stephen Meyer, Sean McDowell, Mónica Guzmán, and Jonathan Haidt. During the COVID-19 pandemic, BioLogos provided the best-available public health information in a fully Christian framework, and thousands signed the Christian Statement on Science for Pandemic Times.

In 2021, BioLogos released the Integrate curriculum for high school students, now used in Christian schools and homeschools across the country.

Today, BioLogos continues to equip the church, to engage the world, and to empower the next generation. The website is visited by over a million people each year, with the regularly updated Common Questions remaining one of the most popular sections. The Voices speakers bureau offers BioLogos experts to venues around the country, and the Insights animated videos and growing social media channels give many opportunities to engage online.

BioLogos was recently awarded a grant from the Bezos Earth Fund which presents another opportunity to show the many ways that faith and science work hand in hand to address the challenges facing the church and the world today.
